Challenger Sunroof and Moonroof Maintenance and Common Issues
The Challenger's panoramic sunroof looks great but has specific maintenance needs. Here's what owners should know.
Panoramic Sunroof Overview
Select Challenger trims include a panoramic sunroof spanning both front and rear passengers. The system includes a sliding glass panel, a wind deflector, and a sun/privacy shade.
Common Issues
Water leaks: The most-reported sunroof complaint. Causes:
- Clogged drain tubes (primary cause)
- Degraded seal around the glass perimeter
- Sunroof not fully seating when closed (motor alignment issue)
Wind noise at speed: Usually caused by a worn or missing front deflector seal, or the glass not fully seated in the closed position.
Sunroof stuck open or closing slowly: The sunroof motor or regulator mechanism may need lubrication or replacement. Running the sunroof dry accelerates wear.
Glass cracking: Thermal stress cracks occur on some builds, particularly with large temperature swings. Replacement glass is expensive ($400–800 for the panel alone).
Drain Tube Maintenance
The sunroof has four drain tubes (one per corner) that exit under the car or in the door jambs. Clogged drains are the number one cause of water leaking into the interior.
Cleaning the drains:
- Remove the sunroof glass or tilt it fully open
- Locate the drain openings at the corners of the sunroof channel
- Insert a thin flexible wire or compressed air to clear debris
- Pour a small amount of water in each corner — verify it drains freely
- Repeat annually or any time you notice water in the car after rain
Lubrication
Use a silicone-based lubricant (not WD-40) on the sunroof track and seal every 12,000 miles or once per year. Wipe the rubber seal with a silicone protectant to prevent drying and cracking.
Resetting the Sunroof
After a battery disconnect or motor stall, the sunroof may behave erratically. Most Challenger sunroofs can be reset:
- Hold the close/tilt button until the sunroof closes and tilts up
- Continue holding for 5 seconds after it stops
- Release, then test open/close operation
This re-establishes the motor's end-stop positions.
