Challenger Oil Change DIY: Complete Guide for 5.7L, 6.4L, and 6.2L
Step-by-step oil change guide for every HEMI variant — with the right oil spec, filter, and torque values.
Oil Specs by Engine
| Engine | Oil Type | Viscosity | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.7L HEMI | Full synthetic | 5W-20 | 7 quarts |
| 6.4L HEMI | Full synthetic | 5W-20 | 7 quarts |
| 6.2L Hellcat | Full synthetic | 0W-40 | 7 quarts |
Recommended oils: Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Valvoline Full Synthetic. Mopar recommends API SP / ILSAC GF-6A rated oils.
The Hellcat specifically requires 0W-40 — don't substitute with 5W-20 or 5W-30 on the supercharged engine.
Change Intervals
- Normal driving: 10,000 miles or 1 year with full synthetic
- Severe service (track, extreme temps, short trips): 5,000 miles
- Mopar max recommendation: Every 10,000 miles per oil life monitor
Tools and Parts
- Oil drain pan
- 15mm socket (drain plug)
- Oil filter wrench (cap-style for the HEMI's cartridge filter)
- Funnel
- 7 quarts of approved oil
- New oil filter (Mopar MO-090, Wix 57502, or equivalent)
Note: The HEMI uses a cartridge-style oil filter (not a spin-on) mounted on top of the engine. It's much easier to access than spin-on filters under the car.
Step-by-Step
- Warm the engine (2–3 minutes) — warm oil drains faster
- Raise the car on jack stands or drive onto ramps
- Remove the engine undertray if present (plastic clips or screws)
- Position drain pan under the drain plug (passenger-side rear of the oil pan)
- Remove drain plug with 15mm socket — let oil drain fully (5–10 minutes)
- Replace drain plug with new washer — torque to 20 ft-lb (don't overtighten on aluminum pan)
- From the top of the engine, remove the oil filter housing cap with a 36mm socket or cap wrench
- Remove the old filter cartridge — replace with new filter
- Reinstall cap — torque to 18 ft-lb
- Fill with 7 quarts of correct oil via the fill cap on top of the engine
- Start and idle for 2 minutes — check for leaks
- Check oil level on dipstick — add if needed
- Reset the oil life monitor (hold the oil can icon on the instrument cluster)
