Challenger Fuel System: Injector Cleaning vs Replacement
Dirty injectors cause rough idle and poor fuel economy. Should you clean or replace them? Here's the breakdown.
Signs of Dirty or Failing Injectors
- Rough idle or misfires (especially at idle)
- Hesitation on acceleration
- Increased fuel consumption
- P030X misfire codes for specific cylinders
- Failed fuel trim readings (lean condition on affected cylinders)
How Injectors Get Dirty
Port fuel injectors on the HEMI can accumulate:
- Carbon deposits from combustion blowback
- Fuel varnish from ethanol-blended gasoline left sitting
- Debris from a compromised fuel system
The HEMI's multi-strike ignition helps keep combustion cleaner than some competitors, but injectors still benefit from periodic maintenance.
Cleaning Options
Fuel system cleaner (additive): Products like Techron or Redex added to the fuel tank work through the fuel system at each injection cycle. Effective for mild buildup — best as a preventative measure every 15,000–20,000 miles.
Induction cleaning service: A shop connects a pressurized solvent to the intake — the engine draws it through the throttle body and past the injectors. Removes deposits from injector tips and intake valves.
Ultrasonic injector cleaning: The injectors are removed and cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. The most thorough cleaning method. Cost: $15–30 per injector at a specialist shop. Results in flow-matched injectors.
When to Replace Instead of Clean
Replace injectors if:
- Flow testing shows one injector flowing significantly less than others (more than 5% difference)
- An injector is leaking when closed (fuel in the combustion chamber when idle)
- The injector body is cracked or the electrical connector is damaged
Replacement Injectors
OEM Mopar injectors or Siemens Deka injectors are the recommended direct replacements. For performance applications requiring more fuel flow, upgrade to a larger injector with appropriate tune recalibration.
Injector O-Rings
When removing injectors for any reason, always replace the O-rings. O-ring failure causes a vacuum leak at the injector seat, leading to rough idle and lean conditions. O-ring kits are inexpensive ($10–20 for a full set).
