Challenger Differential Fluid: When to Change It and What to Use
The rear differential is often neglected — here's the correct fluid, change interval, and signs of trouble.
Why Differential Fluid Matters
The rear differential contains a hypoid gear set (ring and pinion) that operates under extreme pressure. Gear oil provides lubrication and heat transfer. Neglected fluid breaks down and causes accelerated wear, especially under track or towing loads.
Challenger Differential Specs
Stock limited slip rear differential (all Scat Pack, Hellcat, and most R/T models):
- Fluid: 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil with limited slip additive
- Mopar spec: MS-10111
- Popular choices: Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90, Redline MT-90, Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W-90
Open differential (some base V6 and R/T models):
- Same 75W-90 GL-5, no additive required
Volume
The Challenger differential holds approximately 1.0–1.2 quarts depending on model year. Always fill to the bottom of the fill plug opening.
Change Intervals
- Normal street driving: Every 30,000–45,000 miles
- Track/autocross use: Every 15,000–20,000 miles
- After water crossing or suspected contamination: Immediately
Signs of Degraded Differential Fluid
- Chattering or clunking on tight turns: Limited slip clutch packs grabbing — often fixed with a fluid change + additive
- Whining noise at speed: Gear wear or low fluid level
- Burnt gear oil smell: Fluid overheated from track use
The Drain and Fill Process
- Lift the rear of the car safely on jack stands
- Locate the fill plug (top) and drain plug (bottom) on the differential housing
- Remove fill plug first (confirm you can open it before draining)
- Remove drain plug, drain completely
- Reinstall drain plug with fresh crush washer
- Add 75W-90 gear oil until fluid reaches bottom of fill plug hole
- Reinstall fill plug
Tip: Use a hand pump or transfer pump to inject fluid through the fill hole — access is limited on the Challenger's rear diff.
Limited Slip Additive
The Challenger's Trac-Lok limited slip differential requires a friction modifier additive (GM Part# 1052358 or equivalent) to prevent chattering. When in doubt, add 4 oz of friction modifier with every fluid change.
