Building a Show Car: How to Detail and Prep Your Challenger for Car Shows

From paint correction to engine bay detailing — how to get your Challenger ready for the show field.

Show Car vs Street Car

A show car is judged on presentation: paint clarity, fitment of modifications, interior cleanliness, and engine bay appearance. Even a stock Challenger can place well with excellent preparation.

Paint Correction First

Show judges (and photographers) notice swirl marks, water spots, and buffer trails under direct lighting.

Stage 1 correction: Single polish pass removes light swirls and enhances gloss.

Stage 2 correction: Cut and polish removes deeper scratches and oxidation.

Stage 3: Full wet sanding — reserved for serious competition or heavily damaged paint.

After correction, protect with ceramic coating or a show-grade carnauba wax. Ceramic holds longer; wax gives a warmer, deeper look some judges prefer.

Wheels and Tires

Tires should be fresh — cracked or browning tires kill an otherwise great presentation. Use a water-based tire dressing (not silicone-slinging) for a satin finish judges prefer over high-gloss.

Wheels: full decontamination with iron remover, clay, then polished if bare aluminum or chrome. Powder-coated wheels need a good cleaner and protectant.

Engine Bay

Engine bay detailing separates placer builds from also-rans at serious shows.

  • Degrease thoroughly, rinse carefully (avoid direct water on alternator and fuse box)
  • Dress rubber hoses and plastic trim with protectant
  • Polish or powder coat valve covers
  • Hide or re-route visible wiring with braided loom
  • Add polished fluid caps and billet accessories

The Hellcat engine bay shows well stock — the supercharger cover is dramatic. R/T and Scat Pack bays benefit more from dressing up valve covers and adding custom CAI components.

Interior

Vacuum every crack. Dress plastics. Clean leather with pH-neutral cleaner and conditioner. Remove floor mats and detail under them.

For modified show interiors: aftermarket shift knobs, dead pedals, and custom gauge faces photograph well.

Fitment

Aftermarket wheels must be properly spaced — visible rubbing or improper offset kills judging scores. Lowering should be even side-to-side (check with a tape measure at all four corners).

Show Day

Arrive early. Do a final wipe-down with a quick detailer. Use a quality microfiber — cheap cloths leave lint. Prop the hood. Bring a small touch-up kit (quick detailer, microfiber, tire dressing) for morning dew or dust.
