Weight Reduction: The Free Horsepower Nobody Talks About

Every 10 pounds you remove from your Challenger is roughly equivalent to adding 1 HP. Here's where to find easy weight savings.

The 2022 Challenger is not a light car — it tips the scales at 3,800–4,400+ lbs depending on trim. While everyone focuses on adding horsepower, removing weight gives you the same performance improvement for often less money. The rough rule of thumb: every 10 lbs removed is equivalent to about 1 HP gained in terms of acceleration.

The Best Weight Savings

Carbon Fiber Driveshaft (saves 15–20 lbs)

The stock steel driveshaft weighs about 30 lbs. A carbon fiber unit from QA1 or The Driveshaft Shop cuts that roughly in half. Better yet, this is rotating mass — reducing rotating weight has an even greater effect on acceleration than static weight because the engine doesn't have to spin it up.

Lightweight Wheels (saves 20–40 lbs total)

Factory wheels on the Challenger are heavy — often 28–32 lbs each. A set of forged wheels from Weld Racing, Forgeline, or Volk can weigh 18–22 lbs each. That's 24–40 lbs of unsprung, rotating weight savings — the most impactful type.

Lightweight Battery (saves 25–35 lbs)

An Antigravity or Braille lithium battery weighs 5–8 lbs vs. the stock lead-acid battery at 40+ lbs. This is one of the easiest weight savings on the car.

Carbon Fiber Hood (saves 30–50 lbs)

A carbon fiber hood from Anderson Composites or Seibon replaces the heavy steel factory hood. Some hoods also include functional heat extractors.

Where NOT to Remove Weight

Don't remove safety equipment (airbags, seatbelts, structural bracing). Don't remove the spare tire if you daily drive the car. And don't bother with weight savings that compromise comfort (removing sound deadening) unless you're building a dedicated race car.

The Compound Effect

Weight reduction compounds with every other modification. Your intake, tune, exhaust, and headers all become more effective on a lighter car. A 100 lb weight reduction combined with 50 HP in bolt-ons will feel faster than the same 50 HP on a stock-weight car.
