Manual vs. Automatic: How Your Transmission Affects Mod Choices

Your transmission type changes which mods you need and which ones you can skip. Here's a breakdown of the key differences for mod planning.

The 2022 Challenger comes with either a Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual or a TorqueFlite 8HP70 8-speed automatic. Your transmission choice affects which modifications you need, which you can skip, and what additional parts to budget for.

MDS: The Biggest Difference

MDS (Multi-Displacement System) only exists on automatic Challengers. If you have a manual transmission, your car does not have MDS. This matters enormously for camshaft swaps:

Automatic: Cam swap requires MDS delete lifters, MDS delete plugs, valve springs, pushrods, VVT limiter, and tune.

Manual: Cam swap requires valve springs, pushrods, VVT limiter, and tune — no MDS components needed. This saves $300–$500 in parts.

Transmission-Specific Parts

Manual only:

  • Short-throw shifter (Barton, Hurst, B&M)
  • Skip-shift eliminator (disables 1-to-4 skip shift)
  • Aftermarket clutch (once you exceed ~450 ft-lbs torque, the stock clutch starts slipping)
  • Lightweight flywheel (improves rev response)

Automatic only:

  • Torque converter (higher stall speed for drag racing)
  • Transmission cooler (important for track use)
  • Shift kit (firmer, faster shifts)

Power Thresholds

Manual: The stock TR-6060 clutch holds approximately 450 ft-lbs of torque reliably. Beyond that, budget $800–$1,500 for a performance clutch. The transmission itself is strong to 700+ HP.

Automatic: The 8HP70 is surprisingly robust. The stock torque converter handles 550+ HP, but a higher-stall converter improves launch performance. The transmission can handle 700+ HP with fluid upgrades.

Which Is Better for Modding?

Both are excellent platforms. The automatic is actually faster in a straight line (faster shifts, torque converter multiplication), while the manual gives you more control and is more engaging to drive. For drag racing, automatic. For spirited driving and track days, manual. For all-around enjoyment, whichever makes you happier.
