Why Install This?
Benefits
- Better traction and more predictable cornering under power
- Eliminates the one-tire fire from the stock open diff
Things to Know
- Professional installation recommended — requires differential fluid and setup
- Professional installation recommended — requires specialty tools or expertise
What Does This Do?
The differential is the gearbox at the rear axle that splits power between the left and right wheels. A 'limited slip' differential (LSD) ensures both wheels get power, even when one has less grip. The stock open diff sends power to the wheel with LESS grip — which is why you do one-wheel burnouts. The Wavetrac uses an automatic torque-biasing design with a unique gerotor pump that maintains bias even when one wheel is completely unloaded (airborne, for example). Benefits: dramatically improved traction on launches and in corners, zero maintenance (no special fluid or clutch packs to wear), and it works seamlessly — you don't even know it's there until you need it. Trade-offs: expensive for what it is (a set of gears). Installation requires a professional with differential setup experience ($400-600 labor). Gear whine is rare but possible if setup isn't perfect. If you're doing drag launches with drag radials, this makes a massive difference in consistency.
